　　 Main points:What is information? What is information management? And who does information management as a profession? These questions must be answered before anybody moves into information management studies. Though there are no definite answers to the questions, as different people from different fields may have different views, students will be brought to the starting point of learning the subject: information management.

Part Two Information Content Management

　　 Main points:Information processing is a concept closely associated with information management that does something to information to make it into something else, that is, to change in some way information content. Classification, cataloging, abstracting and indexing, and digitization, all these change information content in some way, into a catalog card, or an abstract or an index, or an arrangement by subject, by author, or by title. In order to illustrate this, classification, abstract and abstracting, and index and vocabulary control will be discussed.

Part Three Process of Information

　　 Main points:Information management also exists in the process of information in which information management is done so as to acquire, analyze and store information, to disseminate and retrieve information. In the whole process of information, the content is transformed or transferred either in analog form or in digital form, from one place to another place, from one person to another person. Concepts and philosophies are to be explained through studying four passages in this part.

Part Four information resource management

　　 Main points:Information Management means information resources management relating to all the resources required to manage information, of which records management, library collection management, database management, network management could be included as fine examples. For example, information science provides information theory and ways to measure information. The development of information technology equips information management with advanced hardware. Information as a strategic resource and an important commodity follows all principles of business when it goes into market. Information content management can not do without cataloging, abstracting and indexing services, which were initiated by library science as its essential part of librarians’ education and practice.
